Lee County’s Future
The mission of Women For a Better Lee is to elect women to our Board of County Commissioners, but also on our agenda is supporting women candidates for other offices in Lee County. Luckily for us, we have two outstanding women running for local seats whom we heartily endorse and urge you to vote for them in the August 18 primary, donate to and volunteer for their campaigns. Our choices:
Connie Bennett Martin
Connie Bennett Martin remembers camping overnight in the swamp that is now Babcock Ranch — so it is no surprise that today she works for the Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida as the Community Manager for Lee and Charlotte counties.
Still an avid outdoor enthusiast, Connie brings passion and commitment to everything she does – including caring for injured squirrels and other critters in need. Her passion extends to the community of Fort Myers and we expect that her campaign for the Fort Myers City Council, Ward 4 seat will be energetic and informed by the concerns of her Ward 4 neighbors. Women For a Better Lee is proud to endorse her for the Ward 4 seat on the Council.
Connie has been a member of the WFBL Steering Committee and a moving force in our success. A lifelong Fort Myers resident, she treasures the heritage of the city and is a student of its history. At the same time, she understands that there is room for growth, but growth that is responsibly planned, sensitive to the environment and understanding of the concerns of Fort Myers’ residents. She has come out strongly against tax giveaways to developers and advocates for using those funds to improve streets, lighting and adding sidewalks, amenities that improve the city’s livability for all. A fierce supporter of civic engagement, she is a vocal community leader who has led the fight to preserve and conserve neighborhoods. Her innumerable volunteer efforts to raise funds for nonprofit causes in the city are well-known and well-appreciated.
Connie is the mother of three boys (a local Fort Myers business owner, a chemist, and the last serving in the U.S. Air Force).
Running for office is not easy — it takes an individual committed to stepping up and speaking out; to listening and learning; to formulating solutions and accepting new ideas; and willing to stand her ground and keep her word. Connie embodies these character traits and we believe she will be an excellent member of the Fort Myers City Council. Women For a Better Lee educates and encourages Lee County voters to elect women to our Board of County Commissioners who are committed to environmental stewardship, smart growth and respect for civic engagement. We seek an accountable, transparent and fair county government that will improve the quality of life and well-being of all citizens in our community.
